The City of Coalinga and Claremont Custody Center entered into a joint venture to build a new state of the art animal shelter utilizing inmate labor. The animal shelter was built on Claremont Custody Center prison property and by utilizing inmate labor saved the City 1.1 million dollars in construction costs. In addition the animal shelter is maintained, cleaned and animal care provided by inmate labor which provides an ongoing cost savings to the City.

The City of Coalinga encourages residents of the City to adopt animals located at the animal shelter. All animal pick ups, drop offs and/or adoptions will be facilitated by appointment only by the City Animal Control Officer or other Police Department personnel.

Under no circumstances will a City resident be allowed to access the prison property to pick up and/or drop off an animal without the above indicated Animal Control Officer and/or Police Officer escort. City residents can make arrangements by appointment, for an animal pick up, drop off and/or adoption by calling either one of the following numbers:

  1. Direct to the City of Coalinga Police Department Dispatcher: (559) 935-1525
  2. The City Animal Control Officer's Office, located at the Animal Shelter: (559) 935-4213 There will be no exception to the above chain of contact. The Coalinga Police Department, not the Claremont Custody Center, manages the City Animal Control and the adoption process. Pursuant to the City of Coalinga Municipal Code Section 6-1.24: "Animal Impoundment. (c) Disposition of Animals, (2) Minimum Stay. Animals shall be impounded for a minimum of six (6) days (not including the day of impoundment)."
